ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH- JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministry
TYPE OF POSITION: Non-exempt, hourly wage
CLASSIFICATION: Part-time, 20 hours per week
PURPOSE
The Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministry is responsible for overseeing the Sunday
School Ministry and supporting present and developing new, innovation programing for children
in the age range of early childhood through middle school. The director will recruit, train and
support leaders who will instill a strong faith foundation and will strive to keep children and
youth interested in learning and growing in their faith, as well as a desire to be involved in the
life of the congregation. The director will work with and support the Children. Youth and Family
committee to carry out these duties.
CHARACTERISTICS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Bring fresh, innovative ideas to help define what Sunday school looks like in our current
climate of busy, overscheduled families, (Pre..:school through 8th grade)
• Order and distribute curriculum and materials needs for Sunday school and other Children,
Youth and Family Ministry programing.
• Oversee Sunday School ministries including the recruitment of teachers, the development of
teachers and assisting them in utilizing the curriculum to the best of their abilities.
• Communicate with families about Sunday School and other Children, Youth and Family
Ministry programs and events.
• Develop one time or on-going programing for Zion families and their children to participate
in together.
• Develop and lead programming that particularly connects Zion children and families to the
ministries of Zion.
• Oversee the planning and implementation of the summer Vacation Bible School program.
• Oversee the planning and implementation of a children's Christmas program if desired by
families and leadership.
• Assist with the Confirmation program as needed by the pastors.
• Ensure that compliance with Zion's Child Protection Policies is current.
• Learn Zion's church management software and utilize to help organize and manage Sunday
School rosters, volunteers, as well as other Children, Youth and Family Ministry programing.
Encourage families to utilize this software as access points to the congregation.
• Manage marketing and communication pertaining to Sunday School, Children, Youth and
Family Ministries with the assistance of the Social Media Manager/ Admin Assistant staff
person.
• Attend weekly and other staff meetings to ensure regular communication with pastor,
administrative and worship staff concerning activities and events with the ministry
programming.
• Other duties as assigned under the umbrella of Children, Youth and Family Ministries, as
time permits.
SUPERVISION RECEIEVED
Administrative and functional supervision is received by the Senior pastor. A 3-month review
will be conducted by the senior pastor, as well as a 6 month, then annually after that.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Passion for ministry of Christian learning
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to self-start, planning and carry out detailed
plans.
• Ability to build team and build strong relationships with a diverse group of people.
• Understanding and acceptance of Lutheran tradition and doctrines.
• Model a mature faith, Christian character and personal/spiritual growth.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with Sunday School or other educational administration is preferred.
• Associate degree or the equivalent combination of education and related experience in
education, recreation, social work or related fields.
• Experience in recruiting, training and coordinating volunteers.
• Willing to attend continuing education events to broaden knowledge in these areas of
ministry.
• Experience using Microsoft Office suite.
