Our mission statement:

Zion's Social Justice Community Action Team (SJCAT) is guided by the principles of “The Church in Society: A Lutheran Perspective (1981)”  with the belief in the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals and the acknowledgement of our collective responsibility to advocate for justice and uphold human rights. Within the framework of the ELCA, the SJCAT is committed to fostering for Zion a culture of compassion, solidarity, and service within our local, state, national and international communities.

Following this call, the SJCAT seeks to actively listen to our fellow church members and neighbors and look for opportunities within the Iowa City community and beyond to share God’s love. God calls us to be agents of transformation: By nurturing relationships and fostering empowerment through education, advocacy and service we strive to embody Christ’s love in tangible ways and work alongside our community members to address systemic injustices, alleviate suffering, and promote the common good.

SJCAT and Zion are not meant to be alone in these efforts. SJCAT offers a space for members of Zion to connect and partner with other organizations within our community, state, nation and the world with whom we have shared interests. At SJCAT, we prayerfully consider less talk and more action: “God’s work, our hands”.

We joyfully invite you to join this meaningful calling. Please contact any of the current SJCAT members for more information!
